Okonomi-yaki

Okonomi-yaki!!! Yumm...

Yesterday after watching Memoirs of a Geisha with a friend, the husband brought me to this Japanese restaurant Abeno Too in Leicester Square-Soho for dinner.

It's a specialty restaurant that serves 'Okonomi-yaki' Japanese savoury pancakes. It was a first time experience for the husband, so he was rather excited. The DDA had experienced home cooked 'Okonomi-yaki' with Japanese friends some 4-5 years ago, but it was a first to taste it in a restaurant.

Small it is the restaurant, it has been set up in a rather functional way. They have bar counter seats, and individual window seats. Storage area is found under your seats if you've got your jackets and shopping to store away safely while you dine. Food is cooked in front of customers on their built in table top hot plates. Cool!

One thing to take bear in mind is that waiting is part of the experience. So don't spoil the experience if you don't have the time! The food made up for the long wait to be seated as it is a busy restaurant on a Saturday night. Apart from the 'Okonomi-yaki', they have a list of interesting side dishes that one can taste while waiting for the pancakes to cook - approximately 15mins. We had Hiyayakko (chilled tofu) and Seaweed Salad whilst waiting for our Tokyo style Okonomi-yaki to cook.

Sorry that the pictures didn't turn out as good. It was a last minute decision to dine out, so no camera handy.

Try to google it up if you're curious to check out the full Okonomi-yaki picture. I've managed to google up some handy recipes too:
