Nesting Swans III

Today on the way to visit the Mudchute park and farm, the DDA & husband went pass the swans again to check. Due to a sunny outlook, the pen has decided to get up and stretch her legs. So we managed to sneak a few shots to share with you. Click on the images for an enlarged view.

From the above pictures you can see that these Swans are city birds that make do with whatever material they find around these docks to make nest. Stones and ropes are hardly nesting material you'd imagine birds would use, nevertheless nature finds its own ways to adapt.

Sushi Dinner

The dinner wouldn't be complete without miso soup. So the DDA made a simple miso soup from scratch. If you are interested, check Keittokirja for the improvised miso soup recipe.

Nesting Swans II

Husband and the DDA went visiting the swans over the weekend. In fact, they are going past the swans almost everyday on their way home to keep watch. Most of the time the pen just roosts over the eggs. She's sleeping most of the time, not leaving the nest at all. On rare occassions she would get up and stretch her legs and turn the eggs. We have spotted 5!

Click on the below images to get a better view. You can spot the pen moving the eggs around, and getting back into position to roost again.

Maybe the next time we should bring along a proper camera...

Conjunctiva Disorder

The DDA learns a new word today - Conjunctiva.

Definition of Conjunctiva (found on Wikipedia):
The conjunctiva is a membrane that covers the sclera (white part of the eye) and lines the inside of the eyelids. It helps lubricate the eye by producing mucus and tears, although a smaller volume of tears than the lacrimal gland. (London Place Eye Center, 2003)

The conjunctiva under the DDA's right eyelid has been causing discomfort to the eye when wearing contact lenses. This is due to long hours of use, and coupled with dry eye conditions.

The result is that the conjunctiva got wrinkled under the eyelid, creating lump looking pockets which looked like some growth under the eyelid. The wrinkled conjuntiva when moving against the contact lens caused pain in the eye.

That made the DDA really concerned and checked her eyes. Upon finding two lumps under the eye - somewhat like a pimple growth - one would think it's an eye infection. Very worrying indeed, which brought the DDA to a second visit to the optician.

The optician explained that it wasn't any infectious growth, it was a wrinkled eye membrane! What great relief!

Now the DDA has to stay away from contact lens wear for a good couple of days. Apart from that she has to nurse the conjunctiva back to healthy conditions by applying warm towel over the outer eyelid. That would promote eye lubrication with good tear production.

When she goes back to using contact lenses, she needs to reduce the usage time, and use contact lens drops to keep the eyes well lubricated. This should keep the eyes healthier.

Of course then she should get contact lens check up every six months. It costs approximately £30 for a contact lens check up. Not to mention that normal eye checks are separate from contact lens checks in London, it costs approximately £25.

Hairy Chicken

I know this is rather disgusting. But I just felt the urge to share this because it is a horrific discovery.

It is a known fact that chicken bought from supermarkets tend to be hairy. The chicken that come in packets don't get proper cleansing, thus the hair still stays attached to the skin. For once or twice experiencing hairy chicken is fine, but constant experience of it tells you that those people working at the slaughter house must be half asleep doing their job.

You do wonder how they cleanse the chicken when you see this!

Which now makes me think... what is the slaughter house like? What kind of environment is it? How do they handle the packing?... eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewww!!!

Do you think the hair or feather is edible?

Check Omlet UK out. It's rather cool. I landed on this site whilst doing a general search on whether chicken hair is edible.

Nesting Swans

Last December the swans brought a flock of cygnets up. We could see the parents taking the cygnets around. You can see a family portrait here.

The cygnets have long since taken off leaving the parents behind for a while. We have spotted the pen roosting on the tern of late, not leaving it no matter what. Today after our groceries shopping, we passed by the docks again to check. It is confirmed that the pen is definitely roosting. Just by chance as we walked past, the pen took a leg stretch, below her belly on top of the stone pile were eggs!

You can see in the pictures below the pen roosting, whilst the cob stays nearby guarding. What a sight!

Little Celebration

For the 1st year being Mrs Rahunen, the DDA received the below treats:
FicusBegonia
TicketProgramme

Despite the occassional complain from Mr Rahunen that the violets are taking over the living room, Mrs Rahunen got more plants! Hahaha...

And in return, the DDA presented Mr Rahunen:

A handpainted card, coupled with a notepad for keeping 'grand' ideas, and a book for feeding silly thoughts.

Mr Rahunen has spent quite a lot of thought on this little special day. The orchestra session was a very pleasant surprise after being led around Central London wondering where we would be heading. After the performance, Mr Rahunen brought Mrs Rahunen to dine at this restaurant where they had their first dinner date.
